How long should ski poles be?
A rule of thumb when buying ski poles for an adult skier is that they should be 50 centimeters shorter than you yourself are tall. That is, if you are 170 centimeters tall, you should have ski poles that are 120 centimeters long. That equation, on the other hand, is not entirely clear, since not everyone has the same relationship between lower and upper body distributed over their entire body length. Therefore, you can instead make a more accurate measurement, by using a standard measuring tape. Here’s how: · Stand straight up and down with your arms at your sides. Then bend your arms at the elbows at a 90 degree angle out from your body, so that your forearms are in line with the floor. · Tie your fists as if you were holding a pair of real ski poles. · Ask a friend or family member to measure the distance from your clenched fist to the ground. · Add five centimeters to the length you get from the measurement. This is the extra length you will get from wearing boots. If you own your own pair of boots, you can do the measurement with them on. Then you get an exact measure of how long your ski poles should be.
How long ski poles should I buy for children?
As always, it is more difficult to buy clothes and equipment for children than it is to buy for yourself. Children do not have full control over what feels right and wrong while riding, and can sometimes not decide which length is good and which is not. Keep in mind that if your child is very small, he should preferably not go with any poles at all. Many times, a pair of poles in the hands of a child becomes another element to keep track of, and instead of facilitating, it steals the focus from skiing other elements. If you have a really small child, it is therefore best to learn to ski without poles first. When the child leaves preschool age and starts in a real school, it starts to be time to also train the child for skiing with poles. Then you can make the same measurement of the rods as you do for adults. Remember not to buy too long rods, even if it is tempting to buy a pair that lasts for several seasons. Then rather rent poles when you ski, or update as the child grows.
What kind of ski poles should I buy for alpine skiing?
Buying skis is usually a rather expensive affair, which does not always feel completely kind to your wallet. The ski poles, on the other hand, are a completely different thing, which usually do not cost much. We recommend carbon fiber ski poles for you who compete in skis, as they are lightest in weight, durable and it is usually considered to give the best feeling. Nevertheless, there are several materials to choose from. Aluminum is what is usually considered best for you who ride more or less often, but who do not see a future in elite sports.
What are ski poles made of?
From the beginning, all ski poles were made of wood, but of course it was not completely optimal. Wooden ski poles came off easily and if you left them out in the snow, the hydrogen could find its way into the pole, which made it soft and lost its torsional rigidity. Nowadays, it is more common to make ski poles in either aluminum, fiberglass or carbon fiber. The most common ski poles that are probably the ones you can borrow if you rent skis on a ski trip in the mountains, in the Alps or in Austria, they are in aluminum. Aluminum ski poles are good because they are relatively light and very durable. Ski poles are often recommended for alpine skiing for children, as this is when the pole’s endurance works best. Children and juniors who ski with poles are the ones who fall the most. A broken ski pole can be both expensive if you need to buy new ones often, but the pole can also be directly dangerous, if the child, for example, should fall against the broken ski pole at high speed. The disadvantage of aluminum is that it is not usually considered to give a particularly good feeling, and that there are much lighter alternatives. Carbon fiber ski poles are good because they are a very light, but at the same time durable material. If you ski often and maybe even compete in alpine skiing, it is carbon fiber ski poles that are usually recommended. In the vast majority of cases, however, the rods in aluminum are more than good enough! When it comes to the handles on the ski poles, most are made of cork or plastic. Cork is good because it is a material that does not get so cold. This allows you to hold your ski pole without having to freeze your fingers. Nevertheless, it is always good to have a pair of comfortable gloves in functional material. The functional material breathes, which means that you do not have to sweat on your fingers while you ride. Having cork handles on your ski poles is also good because it is such a light material.
